The first female Supply Department head on a combatant ship!

Lt. Melinda Matheny, the daughter of a retired Supply Corps officer, attended college on a full NROTC scholarship, was commissioned in the Supply Corps, and became the first female Supply Corps officer to be assigned to a combatant ship.

Lt. Cmdr. Robert A. Engelmann, SC, USN

LCDR Robert Engelmann was serving in a temporary capacity as Chief, Navy Section, at the embassy, and he was scheduled to return to the United States the week after the Iranian students had stormed, taken over, and trashed the compound in November 1979. He resumed his Supply Corps career in January 1981, when he was released after nearly 15 months in captivity.
