Mail Control Activity Rome
Mail Control Activity (MCA) Rome is a detachment of NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Sigonella Site Naples based at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport. MCA Rome is strategically located for the routing of all U.S. military mail in the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility (AORs). MCA Rome is comprised of eight highly motivated Sailors that work seven days a week to ensure that the mail moves in a timely manner for the Naples community and destinations around the world.
How does MCA Rome get this job done? Mail arrives from all over the world to be distributed throughout the AOR. MCA Rome Sailors work alongside their Italian airport counterparts (contracted mail handlers) from Fiumicno Logistica Europa (FLE) - B3 as well as ALHA group cargo handling services to process mail that arrives from Naples, Sigonella and other European locations to its intended destination as soon as possible.
Outgoing mail also arrives from Sigonella and Naples intended for different locations in the fleet and continental United States (CONUS). MCA Rome personnel ensure this mail reaches its final destination in a timely manner by having a strong working relationship with various airlines and ground handlers. They conduct numerous daily airport ramp sweeps and flight checks to ensure outgoing mail departs on scheduled commercial aircraft and that there is no mail left on the ramp. Some of the airlines that handle the mail are Delta, United, Alitalia, Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM and British Airways.
Additionally, all the mail departing to the Naples military community is transported via a Delta truck Monday through Friday and MCA Rome personnel monitor the truck departure to ensure timely delivery in Naples at the fleet mail center (FMC). All mail is screened by the military mail control agents to ensure the Universal Postal Union (UPU) barcodes indicate the proper routing to Catania for staging at FMC Sigonella. This ensures that the mail for the afloat ships is routed in an expeditious manner and meets required delivery times. Additionally, they work daily with Delta to process the airway bills and substitute delivery bill documents through Italian customs on the NATO 302 document and onward dispatch to Naples and Catania.
The holiday season is no exception to these tasks. In fact, MCA Rome is preparing to handle a higher volume of mail and our customers can rest assured that we will do everything we can to make sure their mail reaches them in time for the holiday season. Our devotion to duty and meeting the needs of our customers remains the same despite the workload and constraints during the busy holiday season.
