Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) Commanding Officer, Capt. Kristen B. Fabry graduated and certified 51 students of 1st Battalion, Alpha and BQC-NR 87th Companies, “Ready for Sea” at a ceremony held at Wheeler Center on Mar. 18.
Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) and 47th Chief of Supply Corps Rear Adm. Jonathan Yuen was in attendance as the guest speaker.
Basic Qualification Course (BQC) is an in-depth 22-week curriculum encompassing the major areas of an afloat supply department to include food service, supply management, retail operations, disbursing management, Navy Cash, personnel administration and leadership. The BQC prepares Supply Officers for their first operational tour by providing students with the personal and professional foundations for success. BQC-Navy Reserve (NR) is a 15-month, comprehensive course of instruction, which provides Reserve Direct Commissioning Program officers and Supply Corps Limited Duty and Chief Warrant officers with the fundamental, technical and managerial knowledge necessary to function effectively as Supply Corps officers within the Navy Reserve.
This diverse group of students included 13 prior enlisted Sailors, graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy, and redesignated officers from Aviation, Army, and Marine Corps communities. NSCS expects 1st Battalion and 87th Company graduates will offer their future commanding officers increasing flexibility and enhance Supply Corps officers’ reputation for being naval officers first, and accountable officers always, by bringing their 77 years of experience back to the Fleet.
Students of 1st Battalion Alpha and 87th Company successfully balanced superior academic performance with community service in and around Newport during their time at NSCS. Logging an incredible combined 802 off duty volunteer hours, they supported the Salvation Army, the Potter League Animal Shelter, Rhode Island Blood Center, Melville Elementary, cleanup of Newport beaches, Fort Adams, and many more organizations. Academically, Alpha and 87th Company held a class average of 95.1 percent and 90.6 percent, respectively.
The top graduates who achieved the highest grade in each curriculum were recognized by leadership with professionalism awards. Ens. Paul Rands, who will be reporting to Group One Logistics and Support Unit, is the BQC 1st Battalion Honor Graduate with an overall GPA of 99.52 percent. Lt.j.g.
