Cmdr. Gerald (Jerry) Norbut, USN (Ret.), lost a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer on Jan. 17, 2014. He was born

Cmdr. Gerald Norbut
July 13, 1957 in Los Angeles to Donald and Esther Norbut. He spent his younger days in Huntington Park, Calif. When he was 14, the family moved to La Crescenta, where he graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1975. While working at Safeway, he earned his bachelor’s at Cal Poly, Pomona, Calif. In 1982, Jerry attended Officer's Training School and was commissioned at NS Newport, R.I. as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in April 1985. He earned a master’s of business administration (MBA) at George Mason University and another master's degree at the Naval War College.
He served 24 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a commander in May 2009. He saw duty on the destroyer USS Cochrane
, the submarine USS Georgia
, and the cruiser USS Bunker Hill
. He also served shore duty at NFD Tsurumi, Japan; Naval Base San Diego, Calif.; NSF Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean; MTMC Falls Church, Va.; and retired from NS Puget Sound, Wash. A highlight of his career was serving with Gen. Tommy Franks during Operation Enduring Freedom
at US Central Command's forward headquarters in Qatar and at USCENTCOM in Tampa, Fla.
Since retiring from active duty, Jerry worked for the Navy as a federal employee at Naval Surface Warfare in Panama City, Fla. In 1990, he married Doreen Tomsick, his high school classmate. Jerry enjoyed wood working, the outdoors and doing things to help or surprise others. He enjoyed and loved his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, his thoughtfulness and his pride and love for his wife and two sons.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 24 years, his two sons, his parents, and his sister and her husband.
A memorial service was held Jan. 29, 2014 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City Beach, at the Long Glass Club. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
