     Retired Supply Corps officer Capt. Bernard Bassing, of Lake Monticello in Palmyra, Va., passed away peacefully at home March 29, 2013. [caption id="attachment_1401" align="alignright" width="206"]

Capt. Bernard Bassing        He was born in Missouri on March 21, 1927 and was a proud graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1949, and served in the U.S. Navy for 28 years, retiring in January 1974.  A veteran of the Korean War, he served in both destroyer and supply fields, with tours aboard USS Kearsarge (CV 33) and USS Lexington (CV 16) and duty at Monterey, San Diego, Philadelphia, the Naval Postgraduate School, Pensacola, Fla., the Pentagon and Norfolk, Va., among others.  He truly valued his military service and the many friends he and his wife made in their years with the Navy.      After retirement, he served with the Lake Monticello board and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in Bremo Bluff, Va.  Survivors include his son and daughter, a granddaughter, grandson and many nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.      A celebration of life was held this past May at Grace Episcopal Church, in Bremo Bluff.
