Theodore Stern CHARLESTON - Theodore Sanders Stern (born December 25, 1912) died peacefully at home January 18, 2013 in Charleston, South Carolina. [caption id="attachment_515" align="alignright" width="150"]

CAPT T.S. Stern, SC, USN, (Ret) Stern was a decorated combat veteran of WWII and a career naval officer retiring as Captain in 1968. Stern became the 16th president of the College of Charleston retiring in 1978. Stern was instrumental in founding the Spoleto USA Festival and active in numerous civic and charitable organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Alva Durkee Stern, and a daughter, Frances Stern Mcknight. He is survived by three children, Theodore S. Stern, Jr., Elizabeth Stern Edwards, Tippy Stern Brickman and eleven grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating Ted's life will be held on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cistern at The College of Charleston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Ted's name to The College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424 or to the charity of one's choice .
