February 3 was another great day for the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program aboard guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg
During the past year, Vicksburg’s
Sales Division (S-3) has generated more than $350,000 in revenue, continuing a long-standing trend of passing significant profits on to the crew.
S-3 Division, the MWR Committee, and other key Vicksburg
leaders were on hand for the celebration during which the Sales Officer, Ens. Dillan Thomas, presented Capt. Logan Jones with a check for $20,000 for use in the MWR operating fund.
“I think it’s amazing the amount of work that Supply Department puts into providing quality services to the crew,” Capt. Jones said. “I can’t wait to get this money put to good use; to gather the crew and families together for morale and recreational activities.”
The command uses MWR funds for many activities throughout the command to include single Sailor liberty programs, divisional gatherings, subsidizing tour costs during port visits, and various recreational activities that help build crew camaraderie and ease the stress of being away from loved ones while underway. S-3 Division does a presentation like this every four months, and during the past year, the division has contributed $56,500 toward the command’s MWR fund. Sailors contribute daily to the fund via ship store and vending machine purchases. Vicksburg
returned from a 5th Fleet deployment in November 2012, and on that deployment alone, S-3 division sold more than 80,000 sodas.
“Plans for future events are currently in the works, to include a family oriented summer bash, which is sure to be a great time,” explained STGC(SW) Jonathan Hanson, the ship’s MWR Officer.
Other events such as a command sports day and an annual family day picnic are being planned.
