About a dozen personnel assigned to NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) San Diego took a few hours out of their day to put together bleacher systems for a local middle school Feb. 22 in San Diego. The volunteer group included both Sailors and civil servants from the command, who worked to set up and store four sets of mobile bleachers over a period of about five hours for Roosevelt International Baccalaureate Middle School, a command Partner in Education.  The bleachers will be used to seat students during school assemblies and other events.

"Because we've got such a close relationship with the school, we like to call them up between planned activities or projects and ask if they need help with anything in the meantime," said LS1(SW) Richard Hockett.  "They mentioned that they just happened to have purchased all these bleachers, but their maintenance staff only consists of two people who share one toolbox.  We figured it was a good opportunity to help them out, so we got a group together, brought a bunch of tools with us and knocked the job out for them quickly." The effort at the school's campus was one of several bringing Sailors and civil servants together to lend a hand through the Navy's Partners in Education program. The command's volunteer teams participate in campus beautification projects, mentoring programs, heritage celebrations, musical performances and other activities with the students year-round.  The program is in line with the Navy's vision for outreach and accession and gives the supply team an opportunity to give back to the local community. "It's really nice when you have so many motivated people who are willing to help in any way they can," said LSC(SW/AW) Michelle Paule.  "With the current fiscal environment hitting hard almost everywhere and with some school systems already struggling financially, we're especially happy we could save them some money just by donating a little time and effort.  Everyone there is so appreciative, and we always have a great time."  By Candice Villarreal NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center San Diego Public Affairs
