Site New London Sailor Achieves U. S. Citizenship

A journey that took many years and several thousand miles ended with a sweet treat for Logistics Specialist Seaman (LSSN) Bin Liu on Halloween.

LSSN Bin Liu enjoyed a celebratory cake with shipmates and co-workers at Naval Submarine Base New London after he was sworn in as a citizen of the United States Oct. 31. Pictured in the foreground are (left to right) LSCM Ken Morrison, Lt.j.g. Brian Doyle, NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Site New London Director Cmdr. David Smith, Liu, and Naval Submarine Base New London Commanding Officer Capt. Carl Lahti.

On October 31, he, along with 60 other immigrants from more than 30 countries, took the oath of citizenship at the State Courthouse in Hartford, Conn. to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.

Liu was born in Qin Huang Dao, China.  While growing up he spoke Mandarin, but he took several English courses and tried to immerse himself in the language.  In 2002, he graduated from Tian Jin Foreign Studies University, where he majored in English and Literature.  He traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii in August, 2007, and under a student visa earned a master’s degree in Global Leadership in 2011.  While in Hawaii he also met his future wife, Ronicesha Wearren, who was an E-4 in the Coast Guard.  After a move to Austin, Texas, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and reported to Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes for boot camp.  It was during this time that he applied for citizenship.

After graduating from boot camp, he went on to Logistics Specialist “A” school in Meridian, Miss.  He participated in the Accelerated Advance Program and was the Honor Graduate of his class.  He reported to NAVSUP FLC Norfolk, Site New London on Sept. 19, where he works for the Consolidated Hazardous Material Reutilization and Inventory Management Program (CHRIMP) as the Hazardous Material Quality Assurance Specialist.

“I am happy becoming a U.S. citizen because it will help me further my career in the United States Navy,” LSSN Liu emphasized.  “I want to become an officer, and this was one step in the progress.”
