4th Battalion Delta and Echo Companies are Certified “Ready For Sea”

     Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) Commanding Officer, Capt. Mark Pimpo, graduated and certified 72 students “Ready for Sea” at a ceremony held at the schoolhouse August 23.

     Graduates included 43 students of Supply Officer Basic Qualification Course (BQC) 3rd Battalion Delta and Echo Companies, and twenty-nine students of Basic Qualification Course Navy Reserve (BQC-NR) 80th Company.

     Rear Adm. Mark Heinrich, former 46th Chief of Supply Corps and Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command, served as guest speaker for the ceremony, and gave the graduates a reflection on his 33 years of experience, describing those years as rife with opportunity thanks to the Supply Corps.

     “Rear Adm. Heinrich’s speech offered great insight to the beginning of our career,” said Ens. Christopher Cate of Echo Company.  “He emphasized the critical role that will be played by the relationships we’ve built early on.  The relationships we develop with our Sailors, fellow junior officers, senior officers, and our chain of command will go a long way in solidifying our foundation for success.”

     During his remarks, Rear Adm. Heinrich urged graduates to, “exude quiet professionalism,” and to become “the person your CO and XO turn to with questions in the wardroom because you’re a trusted shipmate.”

     Prior to graduation, Rear Adm. Heinrich and Capt. Pimpo presided over the traditional awards breakfast, and presented awards to students who distinguished themselves amongst their peers academically and professionally.

     BQC is an in-depth 22-week curriculum encompassing the major areas of an afloat supply department to include supply management, food service, retail operations, disbursing management, Navy Cash, personnel administration, and leadership.  With a vision of providing students the personal and professional foundations for success, the BQC prepares Supply officers for their first operational tour.

     BQC 3rd Battalion Honor Graduate, Ens. William Allen, held an academic average of 98.53, and earned the Navy Exchange Service Command Ships Store Award, Supply Management Excellence Award, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Excellence Award.  When asked about sweeping the awards field, Ens. Allen said, “I came here as a Direct Commission Officer to learn as much as possible about Supply Corps operations, so I can seamlessly integrate as a reservist with my active duty counterparts.  I believe I’ve achieved that goal.”

     Ens. Allen was also awarded an Officer’s Sword by National Industries for the Blind (NIB) Assistant Vice President for Operations Support, Charles Froemke, for superb academic performance.  He will report to Fourth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment in Jacksonville, Fla., and plans to seek a Full Time Support appointment in the future.

     BQC-NR is a 15-month, comprehensive course of instruction, which provides reserve Direct Commissioning Program (DCP) officers and Supply Corps Limited Duty and Chief Warrant Officers with the fundamental, technical, and managerial knowledge necessary to function effectively as Supply Corps officers within the Navy Reserve.

     Lt. j.g. Stanley Treece earned distinction as the BQC-NR 80th Company Honor Graduate with a final overall average of 98.  He will report to Navy Cargo Handling Battalion Four in Charlotte, N.C.

     The Newport County Council of the Navy League recognized Lt. j.g. Franklin Roberson for his selfless service to the Newport Community.  Patrick Burke presented the Navy League Volunteerism Award to Lt. j.g. Roberson for personally volunteering 78.5 hours during the BQC.  Lt. j.g. Roberson will report to USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

     Each BQC and BQC-NR class has the opportunity to honor one of their own who has demonstrated superb academic performance and unmatched leadership during their time at NSCS.  Eightieth Company selected Lt. Tim Johnston, who is headed to Surface Deployment and Distribution Command at Scott Air Force Base, and 3rd Battalion selected Ens. Rebecca Goff, headed to Fleet Logistics Center Fort Worth, Texas.

     Representing the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), retired Capt. Robert Winneg awarded Lt. David Sanchez with the MOAA Professionalism Award.  This award is presented to the student who best demonstrates the enduring values of selfless service, true patriotism, strong moral ethics, and a commitment to achieving outstanding accomplishments.  Lt. Sanchez will report to Defense Logistics Agency at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

     Ens. Joel Sam earned the Navy Food Service Excellence Award, presented for achievement of the highest grade in Food Service, 98.2.  Ens. Sam will report to USS New York (LPD 21) in Norfolk, Va.

     Each company has the opportunity to select an instructor who is recognized by the students for providing the highest quality instruction, leadership, and mentorship.  Food Service instructor, and Echo Company Sponsor,  Lt. David Laws was selected as Echo Company Instructor of the Battalion.  Fellow Food Service instructor Martinez Miller was selected for the second consecutive Battalion as the Instructor of the Battalion for Delta Company.  “I accept the award with humility,” Miller said.  “I’m honored by their selection from so many experienced instructors, and I’m just glad I could give back to the class and help train such fine future Food Service Officers.”
