Truman Chief Awarded for Extraordinary Leadership

The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) recognized LSC(SW/AW) Larry McIntosh for earning the Navy and Marine Corps Association (NMCA) Leadership Award this past October.

Fellow Chief Petty Officers serving aboard Truman nominated his for the award.

According to CMDCM(AW/SW/IDW) R. D. Kemp Sr., LSC McIntosh was very deserving of this distinction.

“He is the real deal, Chiefs Pride personified,” CMDCM Kemp explained.  “He is a true team player, routinely stepping out of his comfort zone and challenging others to do the same.  He has a keen ability to inspire and encourage both junior Sailors and fellow Chiefs.”

According to LSC McIntosh, the award is a reflection of the support from the Sailors he leads, and the support from his fellow chiefs.

“It is important to be recognized by your peers,” LSC McIntosh said.  “To be thought of as one of the top leaders in a group full of leaders is extremely humbling.”

He also said how proud his Sailors were after it was announced he won the award.

“A lot of my Sailors felt like they had won this award,” LSC McIntosh said.  “In essence, they did.  My Sailors were the driving force behind this award.  They step up and obtain qualifications and score high on Navy advancement exams.  They are proud of their Chief, and their Chief is proud of them.”

LSSN Nichole Johnson, a storekeeper serving in Truman’s S-8 division, said LSC McIntosh motivates her and the entire division.

“He attacks a problem as soon as he knows about it,” she said.  “He quickly knows how to solve it.  He takes a positive approach to everything and he inspires every Sailor to do bigger and better things in their personal and professional life.”

“Chief McIntosh is a true professional and he inspires me to be a better Sailor,” LSSN Johnson added.

LSC McIntosh enlisted in the Navy in September 1992 as an undesignated airman, completed Basic Training at Recruit Training Command San Diego, completed training at the Apprenticeship School, and attended Aviation Storekeeper “A” School at the Service School Command in 1995.  He also is a graduate of the University of Maryland University College.

NMCA awards are presented to the individuals in each naval aviation community who have distinguished themselves and earned positive reputations based upon the highest standards of leadership and professionalism.  The recipients of the award are selected by their peers within their commands.
